Labor Day will be here before you know it, and the three-day weekend is great time to pack up the family for a fun vacation. It makes sense to pick a destination you can get to fairly quickly so that you don't waste too much of the long weekend on travel. That will leave more time for you and your kids to take in the sights, maximize your experience and have a fantastic time. 1. Block Island, RI

A great place for New Englanders is Block Island, just 13 miles offshore and it's known for great Labor Day weather. Bring your bicycles and ride the route from the Southeast Lighthouse to the North Light Lighthouse. If you're into fishing, try angling for striped bass. You can also hike and enjoy the ocean. There are plenty of cozy B&Bs and good seafood restaurants around, too.

2. Washington, DC

The nation's capital is chock-full of free Labor Day attractions for the whole family. There are plenty of museums, free holiday events, and a zoo in Washington, DC. Check out the annual Labor Day Capitol Concert, the dozens of monuments, Congress and the White House. Best of all, most of the politicians will be out of town.

3. Rapid City, SD

Howdy partner, looking for a wild west adventure? Rapid City is a great jumping-off point for the Black Hills National Forest, Bear Country USA, Wild Horse Sanctuary and Custer State Park. A side trip to Mount Rushmore can inspire your kids, and they'll have an opportunity to encounter baby bears, bison, prairie dogs, mustang and elk.

4. Orlando, FL

Your kids will flip their lids if you get them Labor Day weekend passes to the various attractions, including Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, SeaWorld, LEGOLand, Busch Gardens and so forth. There aren't enough hours in the Labor Day weekend to enjoy all the sites in Orlando, but give it your best shot.

5. Charleston, SC

Why fiddle-dee-dee! Close to the shore, a visit to beautiful Charleston is like taking a step back in time. Just wandering the streets is great fun, and the local restaurants are as good as any in the nation. The kids can burn off their calories at the Memorial Waterfront Park and the South Carolina Aquarium. A short trip to Patriots Point will allow you to tour the USS Yorktown, a huge aircraft carrier. Also, look out for Labor Day sales in the downtown shops.

6. New York City, NY

The Big Apple can provide 24 hours a day of non-stop fun. Enjoy the landmarks, including Central Park, Lincoln Center, Greenwich Village, South Street Seaport and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Hayden Planetarium is a family favorite, as is the Museum of Natural History. Thousands of restaurants and hotdog stands provide meals in every price range, and everyone knows New York has the best pizza (except for Chicago).

7. Las Vegas, NV

Once the playground for adults, Las Vegas reinvented itself to become a family-friendly destination. There are plenty of shows and attractions including Cirque du Soleil and the Star Trek Experience that you and your family can check out. Visit the Hoover Dam or camp out in the desert.

Most of the best casinos have supervised play areas where you can park your kids while you test out your poker skills.
