Going from Tucson, Arizona to New York City just got a lot easier. American Airlines recently introduced daily, nonstop service between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Tucson International Airport. American Airlines started offering the service, which has been one and a half years in the making, on October 6th. A joint task force that included local businesses, the airport, the Metro Chamber and the city of Tucson have been working together to make this possible.

The flight has a scheduled departure time of 8:15 a.m. Arizona time and a scheduled arrival time of 4:02 p.m. EST. Returning flights from New York, JFK, have a scheduled departure time of 5 p.m. EST and a scheduled arrival time in Tucson, TUS, at 7:34 p.m Arizona Time. According to American Airline's online reservation website, airfare starts at $365 for a one-way fare. Tickets are reasonably priced, considering that it's a time-saving one-way flight.

With a direct flight to and from JFK airport, the flight fulfills an existing demand of the tourism industry. The route also created a much-needed direct connection between Tucson and the Northeast – one that didn't exist before. Previously, anyone who wanted a direct flight from Arizona to New York City had make the two-hour trek to Phoenix.

According to Visit Tucson, a Tucson-based tourism company, visitors from New York are likely to spend more time and money in Tucson. The non-stop route also opens Tucson, and the surrounding areas, up to tourism from Europe. With a morning flight, European tourists and business travelers can catch connecting flights across the Atlantic and back home. Catching a morning flight is a huge advantage as red-eye flights don't coordinate well with flights returning to Europe.

In the last decade, there has been a severe decline at mid-sized and smaller airports in the United States. Airport authorities in Tucson are fighting the trend and hoping to open up more routes in the future.

The Tucson-to-New York route is not the only new route to and from Tuscon. Tucson residents, for the very first time in eight years, can catch a direct flight to Mexico. On Monday, October 3rd, Mexican regional airline Aeromar, started offering nonstop service between Tucson, TUS, and Hermosillo, HMO. These flights are offered on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The flight has a scheduled departure time of 1:20 p.m. Arizona time and is scheduled to arrive in Hermosillo at 2:25 p.m. Return flights to Tucson, Arizona will depart from Hermosillo at 11:25 a.m. and arrive in Tucson at 12:30 p.m. And beginning from October 30, flight arrival and departure times at Tucson and Hermosillo will be at one hour later.

Travelers from Tucson, Arizona enjoy another huge benefit when taking the Aeromar flight to Hermosillo; it's easy to connect to Los Mochis, Mazatlan and Guadalajara because the flight continues on to these three cities from Hermosillo.
