Are These Rewards Cards Better Than Airline Credit Cards?

It is common knowledge that airline credit cards earn frequent flyer miles. But what many credit card users do not know is that many of the cards they use to pay for everyday purchases actually match or even outdo the miles earning potential of airline cards.

Instead of juggling three airline cards, a cash back card and a hotel credit card, you can use just one good rewards credit card to earn points which can then be transferred to frequent flyer miles, hotel loyalty points or be redeemed for cash back.

Besides being more flexible than airline credit cards because you can choose from several frequent travel programs, many rewards payment cards come with higher points-earning rates than airline credit cards. For example, most airline credit cards only let you earn 1 point per $1 of spending and 2 points per $1 of direct purchases from the relevant airline. Rewards cards often let you earn high points on purchases that you make everyday like grocery shopping, restaurant dining or putting gas in your car's tank.

Each rewards program has its own partner travel programs and in some cases, you will only be able to transfer points from a certain program to miles if you hold a specific credit card. However, clever hacks often let you get around these regulations and max out the miles earning power of your credit card spending.

Many American Express cards let you earn Membership Rewards points. These flexible rewards points from American Express can be transferred to partner frequent flyer programs including Delta SkyMiles, HawaiianMiles, TrueBlue (JetBlue), Aeromexico Club Premier, Flying Blue (Air France), Asia Miles, British Airways Executive Club, Aeroplan (Air Canada), Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Virgin America Elevate, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Iberia Plus, Matmid Points (Israeli Airlines), ANA Mileage Club and Alitalia MilleMiglia.

With most partners, you get a transfer rate of 1000 Membership Rewards points for 1000 frequent flyer miles, although a lower rate of 250 points to 200 miles applies to a handful of programs. American Express regularly has special offers which let you earn higher miles for your points.

Chase and Citi both issue cards which let you transfer points to frequent flyer programs as well. If you play your cards right, you can earn up to 5 miles per dollar on your spending.

And in case this comes in handy for you or your loved ones, here are 5 best credit cards that let you transfer points to hotel loyalty programs.
