Questions And Answers For Discover it® Balance Transfer

Question: Can this card help me pay off my credit card debt?

Answer: Discover it® Balance Transfer has a 0% intro APR for 18 months on balance transfers and 0% intro APR for 6 months on purchases, with a 14.24% - 25.24% variable APR after that. The introductory low APR period is one of the longest offered by a cash back credit card, and gives you plenty of time to pay off your credit card debt without having to deal with interest charges. Combined with the cash back you earn, this card gives you a great head start in paying off your debts. On the downside, you get a relatively short introductory low APR period for purchases.

Question: Do I pay to transfer balances to this card?

Answer: Yes, you pay a 3% balance transfer fee for each balance transfer. If you have a lot of card debt, transferring it to this card can be expensive. For example, 3% of a $10,000 balance transfer would be $300. The upside is that the introductory low APR for balance transfers which you get with this card is very long and it also doubles as a cash back credit card.

Question: How do I earn cash back with this card?

Answer: Discover it® Balance Transfer lets you earn unlimited 1% cash back on all your purchases, but you also earn 5% cash back in new bonus categories (like gas, restaurants, Amazon.com, and more), on up to $1,500 in purchases every quarter you activate. That means you can earn up to $75 of cash back per quarter ($300 every year) just through the 5% categories, plus the unlimited 1% cash back on all purchases.

Question: Does this card have a welcome bonus?

Answer: Yes it does. Cashback Match™, a welcome offer for new cardmembers only, Discover matches all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year, automatically. There is no minimum amount you have to spend in order to earn the bonus. The more purchases you charge to this card during your first year, the bigger your welcome bonus will be.

Question: Do I pay an annual card fee to use this card?

Answer: No you do not. Discover it® Balance Transfer has no annual fee which makes it a very affordable balance transfer and cash back credit card.

Question: How much cash back do I have to earn before I can redeem it?

Answer: This card does not have a minimum requirement for cash back redemption. You can redeem your cash back for any amount, any time.

Question: Does my cash back expire if I don't redeem it within a certain time frame?

Answer: Your cash rewards never expire, so you can collect cash back for as long as you want before redeeming it.

Question: Is this a good card to use outside of the U.S.?

Answer: Discover it® Balance Transfer has no foreign transaction fee which makes it an affordable card to use when you travel internationally. Discover cards are widely accepted in many parts of the world. You can use this card to pay at any terminal that accepts Diners Club, as well as UnionPay terminals in China and JCB terminals in Japan. Discover is rapidly expanding its network. However, Visa and MasterCard still enjoy wider acceptance, so carrying an additional card and some local currency is a good idea if you often venture off the tourist path.

Question: Do I also earn cash back when I use this card outside of the U.S.?

Answer: Yes, you earn the same unlimited 1% cash back on all purchases and you also earn cash back in the 5% categories when applicable (categories may include specific U.S. merchants).

Question: What can I redeem my cash back for?

Answer: The cash rewards you earn with this card, called Cashback Bonus, can be redeemed for cash back (as a credit to your card account or a deposit into your bank account), gift cards from partner merchants, or charitable donations. You can also use your cash rewards to pay on Amazon.com.

Question: Do I earn cash back on every transaction I charge to this card?

Answer: Purchases which you return or refund do not earn cash back. Using your Discover it® Balance Transfer to buy currency, get cash advances, make balance transfers and certain other types of transactions also will not earn cash back.

Question: Do I pay a penalty if I make a late payment?

Answer: This card has no late fee on your first late payment. Making a late payment will not bump up your APR, which is a big plus because many other cards raise your APR by as much as 10% or more when you pay late. However, paying late will negatively affect your credit score so avoid it at all costs.

Question: Do I get access to my credit score?

Answer: As a holder of this card you benefit from complimentary access to your FICO® Credit Score on statements and online. This perk lets you save money because you don't need to sign up for a paid FICO subscription to track your score.

Question: Should I use this card to withdraw cash?

Answer: Discover has a fairly broad network of ATMs and you can get cash using this card at any ATM showing the PULSE, Discover or Diners Club logos, as well as the JCB logo in Japan or the UnionPay logo in China. But getting cash using this card is not a great idea because you pay a cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater, and there is a very high 27.24% variable cash advance APR for cash advances. You don't earn cash back on cash advances either, so this card only makes sense for direct payments at merchant point-of-sale terminals.

Question: What do I do if my card is lost or stolen?

Answer: The "Freeze it" on/off switch is a unique security benefit offered by Discover which lets you prevent any new transactions from being made right from your phone or online. $0 fraud liability means that you're not responsible for unauthorized purchases made using your Discover it® Balance Transfer.

Question: How is the customer service at Discover?

Answer: Expect some of the best customer service available from a major issuer. Discover has 100% U.S. based customer service, which sure beats outsourced services.

Question: Who is this card for?

Answer: This card is designed for people who have existing credit card balances to transfer, but who still want a great cash back card with many benefits rather than a card designed just for balance transfers. Discover it® Balance Transfer lets you enjoy all the benefits of a regular Discover card while also getting a long introductory APR period for balance transfers.
