Our Verdict Great card to earn 6 points per $1 on JetBlue purchases

JetBlue Plus Card is the new high-end customer loyalty credit card from JetBlue. Unlike the previous American Express credit card from JetBlue, this is a MasterCard issued by Barclays.

If you like to fly JetBlue, then getting a credit card that lets you chalk up points when you make purchases is a good way to get award flights fast.

In this review we'll look at how JetBlue Plus Card compares with other airline credit cards.

Things We Like About JetBlue Plus Card

Earn 30,000 bonus points. After you spend $1,000 in purchases within your first 90 days after account opening, you earn 30,000 bonus TrueBlue® Points! That's a pretty sweet welcome offer.

You don't pay for your first checked bag. When you travel on JetBlue operated flights, you and up to 3 travel companions on the same reservation won't have to pay for your first checked bag, as long as you've paid for your tickets with this card and entered your TrueBlue membership number when making your booking. This is a huge saver, especially if you fly a lot.

You earn 6 points per $1 of JetBlue purchases. If you do most of your flying with JetBlue, this high rate of points for JetBlue purchases will help you collect points quickly. If you don't fly often, at least you will be well rewarded when you do. Remember, you will need to use this card to pay for your JetBlue bookings in order to earn these points.

You earn 2 points per $1 at grocery stores and restaurants. Most of us don't fly nearly as often as we eat, and that makes this card a real points-earning workhorse. Every time you make a dollar of purchases at a grocery store or restaurant, you will earn 2 TrueBlue Points.

1 point per $1 for all other purchases. Every other purchase made with this card earns 1 point per $1 spent. The more of your expenses you cover with this card, the more points you will earn and the more you can fly using points.

Enjoy 50% savings for eligible inflight purchases. When you fly JetBlue, make sure to use this credit card to pay for your in-flight purchases of food, cocktails, and more. That means 50% off on EatUp Boxes or EatUp Café orders. Although JetBlue does offer free soft drinks and snacks for free, there are times when nothing hits the spot like real food.

You earn 5,000 bonus points every year. After your account anniversary each year, you earn 5,000 bonus points. That's a nice boost for your points collection, and helps to offset the annual fee.

You get 10% of your points back. Every time you redeem your points, you get 10% back. You can then save these points or use them towards your next redemption.

You can get Mosaic status. When you spend at least $50,000 on purchases each calendar year (after your anniversary date) you enjoy all TrueBlue Mosaic benefits for 1 year. If you spend that amount using your card every year, you can enjoy TrueBlue Mosaic benefits indefinitely.

You would normally have to either fly 30 segments plus collect 12,000 base flight points within 1 calendar year, or earn 15,000 base flight points within a calendar year to achieve this status.

Perks for TrueBlue Mosaic members include:

  • You don't have to pay JetBlue change and cancellation fees because these are waived for Mosaic members and others on their itinerary.
  • You don't pay for your first and second bag because they are checked in for free for Mosaic members and others on their itinerary.
  • You get complimentary access to an expedited security line, which makes for a quicker and more relaxed airport experience.
  • You can redeem your points for JetBlue's more comfortable "Even More Space" seats at reduced rates.
  • You earn an extra 3 TrueBlue points per $1 on your JetBlue operated flights.
  • You enjoy early boarding, so you don't need to wait in line.
  • You enjoy complimentary alcoholic beverages onboard JetBlue operated flights.

You get $100 statement credit towards a JetBlue Vacations package. Every calendar year in which you purchase one of JetBlue's Vacation packages for $100 or more using JetBlue Plus Card, you get a $100 statement credit. This can knock a pretty sizeable hole into the cost of an annual vacation or weekend getaway.

No foreign transaction fee. That means you won't have to pay a fee when you pay for something in a foreign currency while traveling. This is a nice saver, as most credit cards charge 3% of each foreign currency transaction.

Your points don't expire. Your can collect as many points as you want and keep them until you want to redeem them, because your points do not expire.

No blackout dates for award flights. You can redeem points for flights as you see fit, without blackout dates to control when you can fly.

You get an introductory APR on balance transfers. This card has a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for the first 12 billing cycles on balance transfers made within 45 days of account opening. So if you plan to use this as your new credit card, you can easily transfer your card balances and enjoy an interest break. After the intro APR period, the 13.24%, 21.24% or 26.24% variable APR applies, so you'd do yourself a favor by paying off your balances in full before the intro APR period expires. The balance transfer fee is either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer (whichever is greater).

Chip technology. This is pretty much becoming the norm, and if you travel outside of the US, it's definitely a useful perk because in some countries not all terminals are equipped to cope with magnetic stripe technology.

You enjoy $0 fraud liability protection. This means that if you report your card as lost or missing, you won't be liable to pay for any fraudulent transactions made with the card.

You can redeem points in different ways. Trueblue Points can be redeemed towards JetBlue operated flights, but you can also earn or redeem TrueBlue points for tickets on all Hawaiian Airlines flights. Plus, you can redeem points towards Jetblue Vacations package (you can combine points with cash to cover these), transfer them to another TrueBlue member, use them to cover many popular magazine and newspaper subscriptions, donate them to select charities or cover your Coffees of the World deliveries.

Our Least Favorite Things About JetBlue Plus Card

It doesn't have a low intro APR period for purchases. This card has a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for the first 12 billing cycles on balance transfers made within 45 days of account opening, but you don't get a low intro APR on purchases. The regular 13.24%, 21.24% or 26.24% variable APR applies from the start.

It has an annual fee. To be fair, the $99 annual fee is very similar to what most airline credit cards charge. Of course, you need to consider the added value you get with this card, such as free first checked bag, the annual bonus and the higher rewards for JetBlue purchases. This card may well be worth the investment.

If you are a JetBlue frequent flyer, JetBlue Plus Card is the best credit card you can get for TrueBlue points and JetBlue privileges.

JetBlue Plus Card might not lay on the same kind of benefits you get with certain frequent flyer credit cards from other airlines, but the perks it does give have decent saving potential. This card will only reach its full potential if you fly on JetBlue fairly often. In that case, the money you save thanks to the free first checked bag benefit and the higher points you earn on JetBlue purchases will probably more than compensate for the cost of the annual fee.

It would be nice if the Mosaic status was somewhat more attainable, but if you spend $50,000 or more annually, the JetBlue Mosaic membership you will enjoy is one more good reason to use this card. Although JetBlue skimps on some more exclusive privileges which other airline cards offer, such as lounge access, it lays on the benefits that will likely help most people save money.
