Our Verdict Great card for earning points on hotel stays

Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card is the official credit card of Marriott and is issued by JPMorgan Chase and is a very rewarding card to use if you want to make Marriott your next vacation destination. This hotel credit card lets you earn reward points faster compared to the regular Marriott Rewards® Credit Card, especially when you use it to pay for Marriott stays. What I like most about this card is its huge welcome offer for new cardmembers, which is one of the highest hotel bonus offers in the U.S. right now.

But is this really the best card for Marriott fans, or would a more flexible travel card work just as well, if not better? In this review we explore the fine print behind the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card and compare it to other options, to help you decide whether this is the card that will give you the most hotel fun for your money.

Things We Like About Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card

Earn 80,000 Bonus Points after spending $3,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening! Spending $3,000 on purchases over 3 months isn't a huge stretch for most people, and those 80,000 points can get you some pretty sweet hotel stays (see chart below).

Earn another 7,500 bonus points. By adding an authorized user and making a purchase within the first 3 months you will receive an extra 7,500 bonus points.

You earn 5 Points Per $1 Spent at Marriott® and SPG hotels. You get these high points when you use this card to pay for accommodations at any of the Marriott and participating SPG® locations around the world. So if you like to stay at Marriott hotels, this will benefit you the most.

You earn 2 points for every $1 spent on dining, car rentals made at car rental agencies and airfare purchased directly with the airline. If you don't stay at Marriott hotels often, but just want to stash away points towards a vacation, then being able to earn double points on dining, renting a car or buying airline tickets can help you collect Marriott Rewards Points faster.

Earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on eligible purchases everywhere else. Just using this card to pay for your spending will help you earn that free vacation stay! Every $1 of purchases which you charge to this card ears 1 point, so just calculate your normal credit card spending to get an idea of how many points you can earn in a year. Just note that only net purchases count towards these points, so trying to cheat the system by making currency purchases, balance transfers or transfers won't help you earn points.

You get 1 free night stay at a category 1-5 location every year! After your account anniversary date each year, you will receive 1 free night stay, valid for any hotel in categories 1-5. This free night more than makes up for the cost of the annual fee you pay to use this card.

You receive 15 Elite Credits. After your account is opened, and every year after your account anniversary, you get 15 Elite Credits. You also get 1 credit toward Elite status for every $3,000 of purchases charge to this card. These credits guarantee that you receive Silver Elite Status, and if you also accumulate a decent amount of Marriott stays, these credits can add to that to help you earn Gold Elite status. Silver Elite Status gives you perks like a 20% bonus on base points earned during stays (so you earn more points on each paid stay), priority late checkout, a 10% discount on regular rates for Friday and Saturday night stays at participating Courtyard® and SpringHill Suites® hotels, and other privileges.

You don't pay a foreign transaction fee. If you travel outside of the U.S. on vacation or for other reasons, this is a good card to take with you because you won't pay a fee when you make purchases in foreign currencies using this card.

Redeem points for Marriott hotel stays. You can redeem your rewards points for stays at Marriott or The Ritz-Carlton hotels worldwide. Whether you want to lounge at a leisure resort or just bunk at a roadside inn, you can redeem your points to cover your stay. Although the exact amount of points you have to redeem for stays may vary depending on the location, here is a basic guide to give you an idea of what your points are worth:

7,500 Marriott Rewards Points = 1 night in a category 1 location

You can get even more stays with PointSavers deals. If you don't mind taking your vacations off-season, then you can get a lot more value from your points using PointSavers deals. These special offers apply to many different resorts and hotels for certain periods of time, and you can find all the current PointSavers deals on the Marriott website. On average you can save up to 10,000 points per night, as this guide shows:

6,000 Marriott Rewards Points = 1 night in a category 1 location

40,000 Marriott Rewards Points = 1 night in a category 9 location

You can also redeem your points for miles. If you change your mind about staying at the Marriott, you can also redeem your points for airline miles at the following rates:

You can also redeem points for miles with many other frequent travel programs. As you can see, you don't exactly get an amazing conversion rate when you convert to miles, but the option is there.

No limit to the amount of points you can earn. The sky's the limit, so the more you spend, the more points you can accumulate.

Chip and Signature technology. The Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card has global Chip and Signature technology which is much more secure than magnetic stripe cards because they are much harder to clone for fraudulent use.

Our Least Favorite Things About Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card

The $85 annual fee. We aren't big fans of annual fees, but considering all the perks you get with this card, we think that annual fee is more than worth it if you like staying at Marriott hotels.

It takes from 6 to 8 weeks for bonus points, certificates and rewards to be added or sent to your account. This prevents you from using your bonus points and rewards immediately and so you have to think and plan ahead when planning your vacations or any other occasion where you would want to use your bonus points.

If your account is closed within the first 6 months of having the card, Chase and Marriott can legally deduct your bonus points from your account. This won't be a problem for you as long as you keep your account open for more than 6 months.

If your goal is to earn award nights at Marriott locations, Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card is the right card to use, in our opinion.

Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card is ideal for people who travel often and like to stay at the Marriott chain of hotels worldwide. Even though it has a $85 annual fee, it is totally worth it if you travel frequently since it gives you a free night stay e-certificate at a hotel in category 1-5 every year, and you get to earn 5 points for every $1 spent on Marriott and SPG accommodations, 2 points for every $1 spent on dining, car rentals made at car rental agencies and airfare purchased directly from airlines, and 1 point on all your other purchases.

With so many ways to earn points, your points earned through the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card will really add up if you travel frequently, and you'll be able to redeem your points for vacation packages, airline miles or hotel stays which can save you a lot of money on travel and vacations.
