Questions And Answers For Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card

Question: Do I get a welcome bonus if I go for this card?

Answer: Yes, you will earn 40,000 points when you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. This bonus sign-up offer is only available to new Cardmembers of Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card. Chase will not award these bonus points to current Cardmembers of this credit card or previous Cardmembers of this credit card who have already received a new Cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 2 years.

Question: Is this a good rewards credit card?

Answer: Yes, you can earn unlimited points with this credit card. Although you get to earn 1 point per $1 spent on all purchases, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card rewards you with 2 points per $1 spent on purchases made directly with Southwest Airlines (e.g. flight, inflight, Southwest® gift card, and Southwest Vacations® package purchases) and at participating Rapid Rewards® Hotel and Car Rental partners. All points that you earn in a billing cycle will be transferred automatically to Southwest Airlines after the end of each billing cycle - you do not have to lift a finger.

When it comes to points redemption, you have limitless options. You can use your points to redeem for Southwest flights or international flights on more than 50 global carriers. What's more, you can also use your points to redeem for hotel stays worldwide, car rentals, gift cards or even experiential rewards the likes of wine tastings, cruises, spa packages, golf trips and more.

Question: Are there ways to earn additional rewards points?

Answer: With Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, you will receive a special anniversary gift of 3,000 bonus points each account anniversary year. Besides earning 1 point for every $1 spent on purchases and 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest purchases or Rapid Rewards® Hotel and Car Rental partners purchases, you will get to earn 1 point for each $1 of the first $10,000 of balance transfers made during the first 90 days from your original account open date. If you do have existing balances to clear, keep in mind the 17.74% - 24.74% variable APR on balance transfers applies, as does the balance transfer fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

Question: Do I get any special benefits from this card?

Answer: Absolutely. Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card will benefit you a lot if you fly with Southwest Airlines regularly or if Southwest Airlines is your choice carrier whenever you need to get somewhere through air travel. The benefits of flying Southwest include no blackout dates and unlimited reward seats on flights booked with points, no change fees (although fare differences may apply) as well as free first and second checked bags. With these airline-related perks you can expect to enjoy, there are definitely savings to be had.

Question: Does this card have an annual fee?

Answer: Yes, this credit card has a $69 annual fee, which will be applied to your first billing statement.

Question: Is this a good card for international spending?

Answer: Ironically, this is not a good card for international spending despite it being a travel-oriented airline credit card. For transactions made in foreign currencies, a foreign transaction fee of 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars will apply. If you travel outside of the country a lot, or if you shop from international stores on the regular, you may be better off reaching for another credit card with no foreign transaction fees instead.

Question: Is this card good for purchases?

Answer: This card is good for purchases only if you pay your bills in full every month. It has a 17.74% - 24.74% variable APR on purchases, depending on your creditworthiness.

Question: Is this card good for taking cash out of the ATM?

Answer: Absolutely not. This credit card has a 26.74% variable cash advance APR, along with a cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the amount of each transaction, whichever is greater. If you need to retrieve cash urgently from the ATM, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card is definitely not the card to reach for as you will have to pay a lot to get cash.

Question: Will my rewards points expire?

Answer: No, all your points that are transferred to your Rapid Rewards® account will not expire so long as your card account is open or if you have flight-earning or Southwest Airlines partner-earning activity at least once every 24 months.

Question: Is there a penalty if I pay late?

Answer: Yes, should you pay late, you will be penalized with a late payment fee of up to $15 if the balance is less than $100; up to $27 if the balance is $100 to less than $250; up to $37 if the balance is $250 or more.

Question: Can I get this card even if I have bad credit?

Answer: Sadly, you cannot get this credit card unless you have excellent credit. If you do not have excellent credit to boot, we suggest you look up another credit card because getting rejected can affect your credit negatively.

Question: Do I get access to my credit score?

Answer: No, you do not get access to your credit score by being a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card Cardmember.

Question: Who is this card for?

Answer: This credit card is great for people whose favorite carrier to fly with is Southwest Airlines. It lets you earn points on practically everything you spend on, more so if you are spending on Southwest Airlines-related purchases. Your points do not expire and you can redeem them for flights, gift cards, hotel stays and more. If you appreciate a flexible rewards program, the Rapid Rewards® program is probably right up your alley.

And if you fly frequently on Southwest Airlines, you will stand to gain from free checked bags, no change fees, as well as no blackout dates or seat restrictions on award flights. Although it comes with a $69 annual fee, this figure is still pretty reasonable in our opinion. Its sign-up bonus is also pretty spot on since you get to earn 40,000 points just by spending at least $1,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
