Questions And Answers For Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card

Question: Do I get a welcome bonus if I go for this card?

Answer: Absolutely. You can earn 40,000 points after you spend $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening if you are a new Cardmember. The bonus points are not available to current Cardmembers of this credit card or previous Cardmembers of this credit card who received a new Cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 24 months.

Question: Is this a good rewards credit card?

Answer: Yes, the more you use your Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card when making purchases, the more points you will earn because this credit card lets you earn unlimited points. This credit card lets you earn 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest purchases (e.g. flight, inflight, Southwest Vacations® package purchases and Southwest® gift card) and Rapid Rewards® Hotel and Car Rental Partner purchases, and 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases. So, literally all types of purchases you make will earn you rewards. Bolstering its ease of use is the fact that all points earned in a billing cycle will be automatically transferred to your Southwest Rapid Rewards® account after the end of each billing cycle. You do not have to bother with converting or transferring your rewards points at all.

Additionally, you have a ton of options when it comes to redeeming your points for rewards. Not only can you use your points to redeem for Southwest flights or international flights on more than 50 global carriers, but you can also redeem them for car rentals, hotel stays globally, gift cards or even experiential rewards such as cruises, wine tastings, spa packages, golf trips and more.

Question: Are there ways to earn additional rewards points?

Answer: By being a loyal Cardmember, Chase will gift you a special anniversary gift of 6,000 bonus points after each account anniversary year. You will also earn 1 point for each $1 on the first $15,000 of balance transfers made during the first 90 days from your original account opening date. But, keep in mind this credit card has a 17.74% - 24.74% variable APR on balance transfers, coupled with a balance transfer fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

Question: Do I get any special benefits from this card?

Answer: Yes, being a Southwest Airlines-branded credit card, you will automatically enjoy a host of perks when you fly with Southwest, including free first and second checked bags (weight and size limits apply) and no change fees though fare differences may apply. Additionally, you do not have to bother with blackout dates or seat restrictions when you redeem your points for Southwest flights - a truly great perk for anyone looking to fly more for less money any time of the year, including during the heavy travel seasons.

And as an added bonus, you get to earn 1,500 tier qualifying points (TQPs) for each $10,000 spent on purchases, up to $100,000 in purchases annually, which equals 15,000 TQPs. These TQPs can be used to count toward qualification for Rapid Rewards A-List or A-List Preferred status, where you stand to enjoy even more benefits and perks like priority check-in and Fly By Priority Lanes (where available), free same-day standby etc when flying with Southwest.

Question: Does this card have an annual fee?

Answer: Yes, you will have to pay to use this credit card. Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card has a $99 annual fee, which will be applied to your first billing statement.

Question: Is this a good card for international spending?

Answer: Yes, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card is definitely a card you can and should reach for when you are making international purchases in foreign currencies online or abroad since it has $0 foreign transaction fee. If you happen to travel a lot or if you shop online in foreign currencies on the regular, you will get to enjoy some great savings because credit cards that do not offer this perk typically impose a 3% foreign transaction fee on all foreign currency transactions converted to the U.S. dollar.

Question: Is this card good for purchases?

Answer: This credit card does not offer 0% introductory APR on purchases unlike some other credit cards on the market. It is good for purchases only if you do not carry any balances since it has a 17.74% - 24.74% variable APR on purchases, depending on your creditworthiness.

Question: Is this card good for taking cash out of the ATM?

Answer: No, this credit card is not one you should use if you need cash urgently because you will have to pay a lot of 'extra' charges. Besides the 26.74% variable cash advance APR, you will also be liable for the cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the amount of each transaction, whichever is greater.

Question: Will my rewards points expire?

Answer: No, your rewards points do not have an expiry date. The points that you earn are transferred automatically to your Rapid Rewards® account and they will stay valid as long as your card account is open or if you have flight-earning or Southwest Airlines partner-earning activity at least once every 24 months.

Question: Is there a penalty if I pay late?

Answer: While there is no penalty APR associated with this credit card, there is a late payment penalty fee of up to $15 if the balance is less than $100; up to $27 if the balance is $100 to less than $250; up to $37 if the balance is $250 or more will apply if you do not make your payment before the due date.

Question: Can I get this card even if I have bad credit?

Answer: Unfortunately, the answer is no. Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card is reserved for people with excellent credit. Should you not have excellent credit to begin with, we suggest you try applying for the card only after you have improved your credit score some time down the road, or consider other credit cards instead. Getting rejected can hurt your credit and you do not want that to happen.

Question: Do I get access to my credit score?

Answer: No, this credit card does not provide you with complimentary access to your credit score. That said, it is important that you be responsible and keep track of your own credit score and/or look it up if need be.

Question: Who is this card for?

Answer: This credit card will benefit you if you fly with Southwest frequently because it lets you earn 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest-related purchases and provides you with perks like free checked bags and no change fees. This card also lets you earn points on all your purchases, including everyday purchases, with no cap on how much rewards you can earn.

The Rapid Rewards® program is flexible - you can redeem your points for a variety of things such as flights, hotel stays and gift cards without having to worry about your points expiring. Plus, there are no blackout dates or seat restrictions when you redeem your points for Southwest flights!

While it does come with a $99 annual fee, there are lots of savings to look forward to with features like $0 foreign transaction fee, a generous sign-up bonus of 40,000 points (after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening), and 6,000 points as a gift from Chase to you for your Cardmember anniversary bonus. We also like that this credit card lets you earn tier qualifying points that count toward attaining elite member status with Southwest.
