The Visa Black Card, also known as the Black Card, is marketed to consumers as "the world's most prestigious card". At first, I mistakenly presumed that this Visa Black is a 'black card' from Visa, but in reality, Visa doesn't have a 'black' tier in addition to its Visa Signature or Platinum. 'Black Card' is just a name trademarked by Barclaycard, and is a credit card designed for Americans with excellent credit who want to enjoy the benefits and prestige of having one of the most expensive cards in the US. So, should you fork out $495 every year just to have this status symbol? How does it compare to the American Express Platinum Card which has an annual fee of $450?
Below I will list the main benefits of the Visa Black Card, and then share with you my opinion of this credit card, and if it's a better or worse deal than the American Express Platinum Card.
Rewards & Other Features Of Visa Black Card
Carbon card. Instead of being made out of plastic (like almost any other credit card is made of), Black Card is made out of a much lighter carbon. This carbon card is patent pending, and feels lighter and different to the touch.
24/7 hour concierge service. This concierge service can assist you in many ways such as giving you travel information and assistance, giving you suggestions on business services, entertainment planning, gift arrangements, specialty services, etc.
0% introductory APR on balance transfers. You will get a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for the first 15 months as a cardmember. This is great if you want to transfer your card balances from other accounts, since for the first 15 months you will not have to pay any interest charges on your transferred amount. After those first 15 months, the regular variable APR will be 14.99% based on your credit score.
Rewards program. You will get a 1% cash back on all your purchases or earn points for plane tickets on any airline with no blackouts or restrictions. 25,000 points will earn you the first $500 of a ticket. Your cash back or points can be redeemed for unlimited cash rebates, airfares, hotel stays, car rentals or exclusive events.
Access to VIP airport lounges. This card comes with free membership to Priority PassTM (the largest independent airport VIP lounge program), but will allow you unlimited access to airport lounges in more than 100 countries around the world. The American Express Platinum Card gives you airport lounge access worldwide!
Travel-related benefits such as $250,000 worldwide travel accident insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, trip cancellation insurance, trip delay insurance, auto rental collision damage waiver, roadside dispatch, legal, medical and travel services.
Zero liability protection against unauthorized purchases on your Black Card account.
Purchase security and extended warranty. Purchase security will repair, replace or reimburse up to $500 per claim of eligible items within 90 days from the purchase date. Extended warranty gives you up to one more year of free warranty from the original manufacturer on eligible items you buy with your Black Card.
What I Dislike About It
Annual fee of $495. This is one of the most expensive credit cards in the US, considering that most credit cards these days don't have an annual fee.
If I were to choose between the Visa Black Card and the
The Platinum Card® from American Express, I would choose The Platinum Card® from American Express for giving you, in my opinion, the most bang for your buck. While Visa Black Card gives you 1% cash back on all your purchases, The Platinum Card® from American Express gives you 5X points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases (terms and restrictions apply). So points-wise, you may earn more with The Platinum Card® from American Express. Plus, with The Platinum Card® from American Express, you can earn 40,000 Membership Rewards® points when you spend at least $3,000 in the first three months. You also enjoy savings on a companion ticket each time you purchase an international qualifying First Class or Business Class ticket through the American Express travel website. Terms and limitations apply.
To conclude, if you have very good credit, are a frequent flyer, and prefer a charge card with no pre-set spending limit, I would recommend you get the The Platinum Card® from American Express. To apply for The Platinum Card® from American Express click here to go to the official American Express website to apply online now.

I have nothing but complaints on the visa black card. I became a member of the card thinking that I would get better treatment being as their fees are not cheap! A bit of background to support my complaint: I planned a family trip and did my due diligence and did not procrastinate on trying to get the best deal on the flights! so I looked on the visa black card travel site everyday for a month until I saw the price that i wanted on the airline tickets, and booked with GOL airlines. A month later the airlines email me that they are not able to accommodate us on the existing reservations. I immediately contacted visa black card. I was not expecting what followed. I was treated horribly by the representatives, they offered no solutions and put blame on the airlines instead of trying to remedy the situation. On multiple occasions I was promised a call back from a representative who "would work with the airlines to accommodate us on a different flight" every time i had to be the one to call after the time they promised i would receive call would expire. This happened 3 times on 3 different days! I spoke with 3 supervisors since I was not getting anywhere with the representative and every time the supervisor would not be helpful. One supervisor went as far as to tell me that they would not pay for the new flights insinuating that I wanted the new flights for free! Basically they told me that it was my problem and they were not going to assist me since the original airlines were trying to accommodate us by placing us on a different day! The way to remedy the situation according to the airlines, GOL, was to have us come back 2 days early from our trip. I explained that it was not acceptable to come back that early as i had already payed for the 2 nights on 2 rooms and it was non refundable. The whole experience was not worth the aggravation I went through. Now, I do have the premium gold american express card and booked with them the airline tickets to get to our destination and did not have ANY issues whatsoever with american express. With american express i am paying a fraction of the annual fees that i pay visa balck card! The whole point is that the visa black card is not worth the fees! They are rude and over price and do nothing for their members! There is no advantage to having them! If i am going to pay for these kinds of fees... IT BETTER BE WORTH IT! SO WHY IAM I PAYING SO MUCH?? FOR STATUS??? YOU CAN KEEP THAT!
