Considering that Wells Fargo has 8,700 locations and 13,000 ATMs, there are good arguments for getting a credit card from this major bank.
However, Wells Fargo issues a number of other credit cards which let you earn rewards, while this card does not. So what makes Wells Fargo Platinum Visa card special? This review looks at the pros and cons of this card to answer that question.
Things We Like About Wells Fargo Platinum Visa card
It has a $0 annual fee. Not having to pay an annual fee to use a credit card means one less expense to worry about. In general, it's usually a good idea to get a card without an annual fee unless it offers outstanding, money-saving features that can more than make up for the price you have to pay each year.
You get an introductory low APR period for balance transfers. This card has a 0% introductory APR for 18 months on purchases and qualifying balance transfers (fees apply; balance transfers made within 120 days qualify for the intro rate and fee) with a 13.74% - 27.24% variable APR after that intro period. This is a big plus if you have card debt, as you can transfer your balances from other credit card accounts to this account and benefit from that long introductory APR period. Just note that a balance transfer fee applies (most balance transfer credit cards charge this), there is an introductory balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each balance transfer, whichever is greater, for 120 days. After that, up to 5% for each balance transfer, with a minimum of $5. Since there is also an intro APR period for purchases, this card works well for making large purchases and paying them off over the intro period to avoid interest charges.
You can choose to get alerts. The idea of credit card alerts may conjure up memories of annoying SMS messages or emails causing your phone to buzz each time you swipe your card. But Wells Fargo has done alerts the right way, giving you the option to choose which transactions you receive alerts for. For example, you can choose to only be alerted when a transaction is made in a foreign currency, or when a really large purchase is charged to your account. These alerts can help tip you off to fraud early on.
Zero liability protection. If your card is lost or stolen, you won't be held liable to pay for fraudulent transactions if you report the loss of your card in a prompt manner.
You get travel accident insurance. When you use this card to pay for your travel bookings, your common carrier trips (airline, train, bus) are automatically covered with worldwide travel accident insurance. If you are killed or permanently disabled in a common carrier accident anywhere in the world, you, your family or a beneficiary you specify will receive a benefit of up to $150,000.
Auto rental collision damage waiver. You benefit from complimentary rental car insurance coverage when you use this card to pay for the rental. This benefit covers the cost of replacing the vehicle if it is stolen or damaged in a collision while you are renting it. It also covers relevant towing charges resulting from a collision. This coverage is secondary, which means coverage only applies if you don't already get the same coverage from another insurance policy. That means you need to turn down the collision damage waiver offered by the car rental company for this coverage to apply. Most cars are covered, but there are some exceptions (exotic cars, for example).
You can get cellular phone protection. If you use this card to pay your monthly cellular phone bills, you get protection against theft and damages that render your phone unusable. If your phone is stolen or seriously damaged, you can get a benefit of up to $600. Each claim is subject to a $25 deductible. There are some exceptions which are not covered, such as when your phone is stolen in a construction site, but on the whole this complimentary phone protection is a useful benefit in this smartphone age.
