2017 is already shaping up to be a huge year for travel discounts for Delta customers. The airline is going into the new year strong by offering discounts right out of the gate. In fact, you may be able to start planning an amazing trip if you're a Delta SkyMiles frequent flyer program member with as few as 10,000 miles in your account.
The New Deal For 2017
Delta SkyMiles members have from now until January 13 to book round-trip award flights to select destinations for as few as 10,000 miles. This deal applies to coach seats only. However, members also have the option to book round-trip award flights for as little as 18,000 miles using Comfort+.
Where Can You Go Using Delta's January Deal?
The current deal from Delta can only be used by SkyMiles members on flights to select destinations within the United States and Canada. The complete list of qualifying destinations released by Delta includes some terrific warm-weather destinations that are ideal for honeymoons, family vacations and spring break getaways. Travelers looking for great places to get away to will enjoy the fact that favorites like Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Seattle, San Francisco, Tampa and Kahului all made the list.
When Can You Travel Using Delta's January Deal?
It's important to keep track of the dates involved with Delta's generous deal for 2017. All flights must be booked by January 13 if you want your tickets to qualify. However, the actual period that the discounted travel can take place within is between January 27 and July 31 of 2017. You must book your tickets at least 21 days in advance.
One thing that's essential to remember when planning your travel routes to work with this discount is that Delta is imposing some blackout dates. The award travel options that are being offered as part of this promotion are subject to a system-wide blackout that will be occurring between February 16 and February 20.
A second blackout period will be taking place between March 30 and April 13. You should also inquire about your specific dates even if they don't fall inside these blackout periods because Delta has also announced that additional blackout dates will be in place for various cities.
The good thing about the February blackout period is that it won't stop travelers from using the promotion to book cheap airfare for Valentine's Day getaways. However, you will need to be vigilant about return dates if you plan to get away for Valentine's Day.
Another silver lining is that the second blackout period will allow you to squeeze in your travel plans for spring break before missing out on the best deal possible. Most students and families are done traveling by the time the last week of March rolls around.
The Bottom Line On Delta's Domestic Discount
Delta is starting 2017 by letting members of its SkyMiles frequent flyer program know that the airline still cares about taking care of its loyal customers. The truth about the current promotion is that it likely won't dazzle every type of traveler. The fact that it only involves a limited number of domestic destinations might leave some travelers out there feeling a bit disappointed.
However, this deal is phenomenal for anyone planning some domestic travel during the generous window of six months that Delta is providing. This promotion is definitely worth checking out if you have any travel plans on the horizon between January and July.
