British Airways usually goes out of its way to make the flying experience a better one, especially for passengers in First and Business Class. For example, the airline has its own tailored gin, and earlier this year, it pledged to improve service on flights to China. On the other hand, in January, British Airways eliminated free meals in Economy Class on intra-European routes, and the airline even stopped offering free hot water for travelers who would like to drink tea! Now, the airline is open to the idea of cutting free meals in coach for transatlantic flights.
British Airways CEO Alex Cruz was recently asked whether paid meals might be extended to Economy tickets for long-haul flights. Surprise, surprise. His answer to that was, "we might do it". Though, if the airline starts charging for food on transatlantic flights, it probably won't be for a while.
British Airways later issued a statement and said that it has no plan to eliminate free meals and offer buy-on-board options for Economy yet. However, just last month, the carrier had problems keeping food stocked on a short-haul flight from Gatwick to Fuerteventura. Passengers weren't able to purchase snacks mid-air. So, if British Airways eliminates meals on transatlantic flights, travelers might want to eat before boarding or bring their own food instead.
For flights within Europe, the airline is under intense pressure to lower ticket prices so it can compete with budget short-haul airlines, including easyJet and Ryanair. There is also plenty of competition for transatlantic flights. Carriers like Norwegian Air and WOW air have been introducing cheap fares on flights going to and from the United States.
