With the ever-looming threat of terror, Paris, France, is planning on building a permanent barrier around the Eiffel Tower. City official Jean-Francois Martins said that barrier, which will be around eight feet tall, will be permanent and aesthetic to boot. The city of Paris has allocated $22 million (about €20 million) to look at available proposals, all while taking into account the aesthetics and feasibility.
Reports indicate that the barrier will be made of glass, but the city wouldn't confirm if that was the case or not. There have been temporary barriers in the past, and since June last year, the tower has been protected by metal grids, which is not as aesthetically pleasing compared to a glass barrier.
The city hopes to start working on the perimeter in the fall, though delays could happen. Once completed, visitors won't be able to enjoy a leisurely stroll under the tower. You will first have to pass through a security checkpoint with an ID check and a walk through a metal detector before you can get up close, but visitors won't have to pay unless they are going up the tower.
The permanent barrier is part of a much larger project, and the city wants to spend around €300 million over the next 15 years to modernize the iconic Eiffel Tower to ease access to the site, improve safety and speed up the lines altogether. Since the Parisian icon is visited by an estimated seven million people a year, it's easy to see why the city of Paris is investing so much in security at its beloved landmark.
