For travelers who are looking to travel light while keeping ticket prices low, Spirit Airlines has always been a good choice. Now, the American budget airline has announced it will soon be slashing the allowed size of carry-on baggage even further. The new rules will go into effect in April and affect all personal items allowed on board.
With Spirit's Bare Fare service, customers can take advantage of incredibly low ticket prices. There's a catch, however. Customers are charged for additional bags, along with in-flight refreshments and seat selection.
Currently, Spirit allows passengers to bring one complimentary personal item on board with them. According to the airline, this personal item might be similar to a purse or a backpack with a maximum size of 16" x 14" x 12".
Once the new regulations go into effect, however, the size of personal items allowed onboard will decrease by 25 percent. This means that personal items allowed on board will be limited to 18" x 14" x 8".
Customers who bring overweight or oversized baggage with them onto the aircraft may face fees as high as $150. The good news is that flyers will have the option to pay for cabin baggage in advance. Prices for this service will begin at $26.
Carriers like United Airlines has its bare-bones Basic Economy fares. And just recently, American Airlines introduced its Basic Economy fare option as well. Under those fares, budget-conscious customers are not allowed to use the overhead bins for storing personal items.
Currently, Spirit Airlines operates within the United States as well as Latin America and the Caribbean.
