Our Verdict Great card for 3X points on travel, gas station, and eating out

Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card is worth looking at if you want flexible rewards and a long introductory APR period for both purchases and balance transfers. This rewards credit card is especially rewarding if you are a Wells Fargo customer and spend a lot on gas station purchases, dining and travel. Unlike cash back credit cards, which generally let you redeem cash back as a check or statement credit, Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card lets you earn flexible points which can be redeemed in many different ways.

In this Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card review, we look at what you really get by using Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card and compare it to other rewards credit cards to help you decide if this is the best-value card for you.

Things We Like About Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card

Earn 20,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 in the first 3 months! It's fairly easy to spend that amount in the first 3 months, which will give you a great head start to earning points with this card.

Earn 3X points on many shopping categories. This card lets you earn 3X points on things you already do such as eating out and ordering in, flights, hotels, homestays, car rentals, gas stations, rideshares, transit and eligible online streaming services. This card makes it easy to earn points fast since you can earn 3X points when you make purchases in any of these categories.

Earn 1X point on all other purchases. You will earn points with this card no matter what you purchase. Earning 1 point per $1 of spending is a pretty typical flat-rate for rewards credit cards, but points can add up fast if you charge a large portion of your purchases to this card.

Low introductory APR. This card comes with a 0% Intro APR for 12 months on purchases and qualifying balance transfers (balance transfers made within 120 days qualify for the intro rate and fee), after which the regular 13.99% - 25.99% variable APR applies. That is a big plus because you can carry a balance during that time without paying interest. If you want to make a big purchase and pay it off over several months, this card gives you the freedom to get interest-free credit during the intro APR period. If you have credit card debt on other cards, you can transfer those balances to this card account and take advantage of the introductory low APR period to pay off your debt without accumulating more interest charges. When you make balance transfers in your first 12 months after account opening, you benefit from a 3% intro balance transfer fee for 120 days, 5% after that. Any balance transfers you make after the introductory period are subject to a balance transfer fee of up to 5% for each balance transfer, with a minimum of $5, so it's best to transfer debt as soon as possible after you get your new card.

It doesn't have an annual fee. This card has a $0 annual fee, which means you do not pay to have the card. Many other good rewards credit cards come with an annual fee.

You get cellular telephone protection. If you use this card to pay for your monthly mobile phone bills, you automatically get phone insurance coverage against theft or damage. This coverage is secondary, meaning it will cover losses above those covered by your other insurance policies (like homeowners insurance or other cellular phone insurance policies). Your phone is covered for its replacement value, meaning the cost of getting a new, similar phone. However, the benefit is limited to $600 per claim, up to a maximum of $1,200 in total claims per year. A $25 deductible applies, so you will have to pay that amount yourself when you make a claim. As with all insurance, you will have to prove that your phone was stolen (getting a police report is a good start) and not all situations are covered, like theft from a construction site, for example. Only damages which make the phone unusable are covered. Most cellular phone insurances have similar terms and conditions. The difference is, you get this coverage on a complimentary basis just by using this card to pay for your phone.

You get complimentary travel insurance coverage. The complimentary travel insurance which you get by using this card to pay for your travel bookings is not comprehensive, but depending on what you want to insure yourself against, it may be all you need. Here is a list of the travel insurance coverage you get with this solid American Express card:

  • Lost luggage insurance. If your luggage is lost, you can get reimbursed for the costs of essential items (clothes, toiletries, etc.) you buy to replace those in your luggage. Make sure to use this card to pay for these items in order to enjoy the coverage.
  • North America car rental and loss. This secondary coverage covers damages or loss (theft for example) to a rental vehicle, when the rental is paid for in full using this card.

Travel assistance services are also included. This may not be as important as travel insurance, but being able to contact someone who can answer your questions during travel emergencies can help you avoid expensive mistakes. These are the assistance services you get:

  • Medical emergency assistance. This is not actual insurance coverage for medical emergencies which occur during your trip. It's simply a service provided by phone or other means which refers you to doctors, specialists or medical facilities in the relevant area.
  • Legal emergency assistance is useful if you end up in legal difficulties while traveling. Just contact this service to get advice and recommendations to legal professionals. This is not legal expenses insurance coverage, but simply a basic assistance service.
  • Personal assistance is available 24/7 to answer travel-related questions you may have, such as questions about visa requirements, required inoculations, currency exchange rates, local customs or business hours at your destination, etc.
  • Travel oriented assistance helps you locate lost luggage, organize interpreters or even get an emergency cash advance in some situations.

Your purchases are covered by retail protection. When you pay for things using Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card, your purchases are insured against accidental damage and theft for 90 days from the time you made the purchase. There are some exceptions, such as pets, organic matter, and certain other items. However, most items are covered. This protection is secondary to the coverage you get with your homeowners, renters, or other insurance policies. If something you buy is accidentally damaged or stolen, you can claim up to $1,000 of the purchase value in reimbursement, up to a total of $50,000 per 12-month period.

Extended warranty. When you use this card to pay, the original manufacturer's warranty on the things you buy is doubled, up to a maximum of 12 months.

It has a solid rewards program. The Go Far® Rewards program gives you a lot of flexibility in the way you can redeem your points. Your points can be redeemed for gift cards, starting from 2,500 points for a $25 gift card. You can also redeem points for travel, and the program lets you choose from cruises, travel packages and numerous experiences. The deals on hotel stays and airline flights are also attractive. You can even plan a trip in advance. Points can also be redeemed for merchandise or digital downloads. You can combine rewards with other card program members for more redeeming power. Other options include redeeming points towards your Wells Fargo loans, or as deposits into your Wells Fargo savings account. You can even redeem your points at an ATM (but stay away from cash advances, as you pay either $10 or 5% of the amount of each advance, whichever is greater).
